  • Sao Francisco Wine Cellars Museum - Madeira

    Raised on the debris of the part of the convent of Saint Francisco, demolished in 1866, the Wine cellars of São Francisco are the most ancient wine cellars of Madeira wine.


    Situated in the Avenida Arriaga this building maintains a baroque architecture where are the installations of the Madeira Wine and his museum.


    In this museum it is possible to appreciate varied documentation, like letters of famous personalities and documents of English firms what they gave rise to the Madeira Wine Co.


    Visitor will be still able to find in the warehouses of aging of the wine, hooves, casks and cubas of wood and Oak done in our cooperages where liters of wine wait for his maturing to be put in bottles.


    We cannot forget a press of the century XVII as well as utensils and the mechanism of other times maintaining it cheers up the whole tradition of these wine cellars.


    This pleasant visit ends with the projection of a video of 'History of the Madeira wine” and with passage for the room of proofs where there can appreciate a good Madeira wine and a painting of Max Rommer, Austrian painter who lived in Madeira Island between 1920 and 1950.
