The first nine-hole course on Madeira was built in 1937. Since then, golf has become an extremely important sport with Madeira hosting numerous events. Madeira welcomes golfers with all handicaps from around the world. The courses on this island of paradise have even been recognized as some of the best in Europe.
Madeira currently has two championship golf courses : the Paleheiro Golf course and the Santo da Serra Golf Club. On the Island of Porto Santo, one can also enjoy Porto Santo Golf, an 18 hole course and a 9-hole

Palheiro Golf Course The Palheiro Golf Course is located about 10km east of the capital city of Funchal. Golfers here can enjoy the breathtaking views of Funchal, it's bay and the seemingly endless ocean. The course itself was built on the two century old Palheiro Estate and designed by Cabell Robinson.
Palheiro is an 18 hole par 72 course opening in 1993. The course is surrounded by pine forests and lush vegetation. Golfers of all handicaps will find a challenge here with this course known for fast greens, tight fairways and well placed sand traps and trees. After a round of golf, stay for a drink at the Palheiro Golf clubhouse with it's exquisite views and world class cuisine.
Santo da Serra Golf Club The Santo da Serra Golf Club hosts the annual Madeira island open and happens to be rated as one of the best in all of Europe. At every hole on the course, players can enjoy spectacular ocean views as well as the islands of Desertas and Porto Santo. This 27 hole course was designed by Robert Trent Jones and has been open since 1998.
As well as enjoying the beautiful and challenging greens, golfer can enjoy restaurant and bar, pro shop, on-site pros offering lessons and clinics, two putting greens, sauna and gymnasium. Just to name a few of the great extras to be found on this course!
Porto Santo Golf Club The Porto Santo Course is located on the Island of Porto Santo, 40km from the main island of Madeira. Golfers can enjoy ocean breezes and stunning views from all around. This course, opening in 2004, was designed by Severiano Ballesteros and built around the natural landscape of the islands vegetation and natural lakes.
This 18 - 9 course is split into two different greens based on both British and American classic courses. With it's numerous lake and cliff side holes, this course offers a fun challenge for any golfer.
