One of the best ways to explore the island is by renting a bike. Follow one of the many Levada tracks or narrow dirt roads and wind into the heart of the island. Hop on your bike and rush along the paths breathing in the fresh mountain air. Take a break from the sun while on a circuitous path through the lush forests. A large portion of this island is inaccessible to cars making cycling one of the greatest forms of island transport.
One can also follow the trails taken every year by the many competitors in the Madeira Cycling Tour. Island cycling and mountain biking companies offer half day and full day activity tours.
