The island of Madeira is composed of mostly volcanic rock which makes for quite rugged terrain. Climbers can enjoy numerous aspects of this island including the mainland mountain range, sea cliffs and the cliffs on the northern edge.

No climbing guide has been edited on climbing routes in Madeira Island and sport climbing routes are almost nonexistent. However, most of the coastal cliffs can be accessed from the top to place a security rope. But the
vast playground of Madeira is still unexplored. This happens to
provide an excellent chance for trad climbers
to open new routes.
In Madeira you will find climbing routes for all levels. The coastal cliffs are the best to initiate yourself to climbing with easy climbs and access, like in São Gonçalo in Funchal, Formosa Beach just west of Funchal or Ponta de São Lourenço in Caniçal. For experienced climbers there are many routes in a mountain
environment in Pico Ruivo and Pico do Areeiro. The majority of the rock in Madeira Island is basaltic which provides very solid walls.
